Interviews

Interview of Alex. T. (French Belgian Guitarist)

Me :
How long have you been playing?

A :
I started studying music when I was 8 at the conservatory, and took the guitar at 12. But when I was in high school I did not play much. I stopped completely at the end of high school. I took my guitar back 6 years ago now and play regularly

Me :
When did you start playing improvised material?

A :
about 4 years ago. I started to listen to jazz, and so I began studying jazz harmony and bought an Aebersold book (a book with a play along CD to practice jazz improvisation). I never stopped since. But I also play in rock/pop band, where we do not improvise at all.

Me :
What do you like about improvisation ?

A :
I don't know.. I like Jazz, I wanted to play Jazz. I like the harmonies. I like playing a different melody each time I play the same tune. I like that you can play the same tune several times without getting bored. You can play for hours using the same stuff.

Me :
Do you compose, beside improvising ?

A :
A little yes. But usually I just improvise, alone, and when I like something that I played, I do it again, I write it, I improve it, I develop it..

Me :
Derek Bailey, John Zorn and other musicians have said that Improvisation is just instantaneous composition, what do you think about that ?

A :
In a way I think it is true yes, because when you play over a jazz tune for instance, you have to think about how the next note can continue  your melody elegantly, while thinking of the harmony and how you can intimate and imply another harmony than the one that's being played. It's the same process as when you compose, but in the moment.

Interview of David F. (english cellist)
David is an english cellist, who plays mostly improvised music (contemporary and jazz, in free form).

Me :
How long have you been playing ?
D :
I have been playing the cello for 10 years now, but I started the piano at about 10, so 16 years ago.

Me :
And when did you start playing improvised music ?

D :
When I started learning cello I played classical music. I really discovered Jazz when I was 20. I started listening to bass player, like Ron Carter, Ray Brown, both also played Cello. Then I discovered Free, Hank Roberts, Tim Berne.. I decided that’s what I wanted to do.

Me :
What do you like about improvisation ?

D :
The danger. You never know what the other musicians are going to play, nor how the audience will react. Composition is a long process, and improvisation is taking that process and making it instantaneous. It’s a really hard thing to do, but so awesome.

Me :
Did you record some album ?

D :
Yes, I record some album, but for other musicians. Some pop albums , a little of rock . A musician’s got to earn some money … But I never recorded anything in improvised music in studio,  I find it a little weird to do that.. But some people recorded some of my lives.

Me :
When and why did you come to France ?

D :
I came to live in France only 5 month ago. I wanted to meet other musicians. From a different horizon.  There was not a lot of musician who played improvised music in my hometown (Exeter).

Interview Of Manu R., Italian drummer and pianist
Me :
How long have you been playing ?

M :
I have been playing piano professionally for 10 years now, and 3 years ago I took up the drumsticks. I wanted to discover another instrument, which has a completely different spirit.

Me :
When did you start playing improvised music?

M :
Well, ever since I was a little girl , I was interest in Jazz. My parent used to listen to jazz recordings all the time. My father played the piano, so he taught me at first. When I grew older I really wanted to continue playing so I took lessons with a jazz pianist. I’ve always played jazz music.

Me :
Do you play other style than jazz?

M :
I did a little, but not much. I get a little bored when I can’t improvise.

Me :
What do you like about improvisation?

M :
I don’t really know. When I improvise, I don’t really think about what I am doing, I just do it. People seem to enjoy it too. It’s just a different way to express myself. Steve Coleman said, “The music I play at one point is just an expression of the person I am at this moment, the way I feel, modulated by my technical capacities at that time.” I think it’s true about improvisation.
